Description: Applicants are invited for the position of Fixed Term Senior Research Officer - GIS Data Analyst in the College of Medicine, reference 5927. This is a fixed term post until 30 August 2013.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with experience in GIS analysis to lead the GIS section of a project contributing to the evaluation of a project assessing the distribution of alcohol outlets and associated alcohol-related injury and illness in Wales.

Educated at postgraduate level, the successful candidate will have sound background in Geographic Information Systems and spatial analysis. Applications from applicants with experience of data linkage systems or epidemiology are particularly welcome. The post-holder will work with established teams of researchers to facilitate spatial analysis of geographic data for use with a large Secure Anonymous Information Linkage (SAIL) health databank based in the Centre for Health Information Research and Evaluation at Swansea University.

The post holder will be required to:

Carry out analysis of major environment datasets, including those obtained from Ordnance Survey. Complete calculations of distances from residences to facilities using ArcMAP’s network analyst, together with model builder, python scripting, or similar. Take a central role in working with the Health Information Research Unit to enable these Environment GIS datasets to be incorporated into the Secure Anonymous Information Linkage (SAIL) databank. Work with the team to participate or lead in writing grants and papers.

The post of GIS Data Analyst is suitable for an individual with an excellent working knowledge of GIS, particularly ArcMap software and the Network Analyst module. The appointee will join the Centre for Health Information, Research and Evaluation (CHIRAL) in the College of Medicine. Health Informatics is a central theme to much of the cutting edge research carried out. The prevention of unintentional injuries and the evaluation of population burden of injuries and treatment effectiveness is led by Professor Ronan Lyons; the evaluation of the built and social environmental on injury and physical activity is led by Dr Sarah Rodgers.
