3-day international symposium covering novel and re-emerging zoonotic pathogens and emerging antibiotic resistance

Information summary

Background/History: Sigrid Jusélius Foundation is the biggest private sponsor of medical research in Finland, and organizes and sponsors a symposium every 2 years on a different theme of medical research.

The theme of symposium 2015 will be Emerging Infections, covering (new) infectious diseases emerging from zoonotic reservoirs or due to changes in global social, economic and environmental trends, as well as antibiotic resistance – eg. ebola, influenza, MERS, tuberculosis. In particular, the symposium targets the One Health aspect of infections including different disciplines from veterinary, medical, public health and other related fields.

Our aim is to collect highest-profile speakers to the seaside venue of Hanasaari island Cultural Centre in Espoo right outside Helsinki, Finland. The symposium will start evening of Sunday 7th June and end on Wednesday 10th June at noon, and will include considerable amount of social program ensuring discussions and networking.

Invited speakers include: Ron Fouchier (NL) - influenza; Christian Drosten (GER)- SARS/MERS; Paul Tulkens (BEL) - antibiotic resistance; Frank Kirchhoff (GER) - HIV emergence; Paul Duprex (USA) - paramyxoviruses

Scientific organizer: Olli Vapalahti (FIN)

Target

Scientists, medical and veterinary doctors, other professionals and advanced students especially in the fields of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology, public health, epidemiology and all those doing research on the various aspects of emerging infectious diseases.

Format

Participants are invited to register to the symposium with or without an abstract. The majority of the talks will be invited internationally recognized specialists (see above), but space will be allocated both for posters and brief talks selected from the abstracts submitted.

Practical information

Attending the symposium and meals will be without participation fees and restricted only according to space limitations (therefore early registration will be recommendable for assuring participation). Also rooms are available at Hanasaari hotel for a limited number of people.
